England's difficult balancing act (India v England, 2nd Test, Mumbai)

It was not Monty Panesar that England missed in Ahmedabad. It was not Steven Finn, either. Not entirely, anyway.

It was actually Ian Botham. Or Andrew Flintoff. Or Tony Grieg. It was the absence of a high-quality allrounder who could balance the side.
As England prepare for the second Test in Mumbai, it is worth looking at the record books. India have only lost at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai six times, twice to England, the most recent defeat coming in 2006.

Talk of that 2006 Test usually evokes memories of Shaun Udal. The offspinner claimed 4 for 14 - including the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar - in the fourth innings to bowl England to a victory that levelled the series. Flintoff, however, made two half-centuries and claimed four wickets and had England not possessed his all-round strength they may well not have risked selecting Udal, the second spinner.

England's only other victory at the Wankhede came in 1980. On that occasion, Botham took 13 wickets and scored a century in one of the most accomplished all-round performances in history. Again, Botham's all-round skill allowed England to field a five-man attack containing two spinners. It was the same story in 1976-77 - England won that five-Test series 3-1, when they were captained and balanced by Grieg's offspin in a five-man attack.
Even in 1984-85, when they came from behind to win 2-1, they tried to find that same balance. On that occasion, Chris Cowdrey was less effective as an allrounder and England were obliged to rely on a four-man attack split between two seamers and two spinners, with Cowdrey and Mike Gatting filling in as support bowlers.

The similarity is that on each occasion England have won, with the exception of 1984-85, they have possessed a Test-quality allrounder capable of balancing the side and allowing them to play five bowlers.

That is not an option as they go into the second Test of this series. Perhaps, one day, Ben Stokes might develop into that quality allrounder or perhaps, one day, it will be accepted that Rikki Clarke has matured into the cricketer his talent suggested he might become when he was prematurely selected almost a decade ago. For now, though, England have to decide to go into the game with either a five-man attack and risk exposing a long tail, or a four-man attack lacking either a second spinner or a third seamer. The pretence that Samit Patel should be considered a true allrounder was undermined by Andy Flower, the England coach, describing the bowling in Ahmedabad as a "four-and-a-half" man attack.
Neither option is ideal. With the batsmen so unconvincing in the first Test, England are loathe to weaken it further and risk a tail that starts with Graeme Swann at No. 7 or No. 8. But, at the same time, they struggled for penetration and variety in the first Test and have admitted it was an error to omit Panesar from the side. He looks certain to play in Mumbai on a recently used track that will, inevitably, aid spinners.

Selection is complicated further by illness to Stuart Broad. His place was far from secure anyway, but the idea of risking a recently sick man with a sore heel in a two-man attack may force a further rethink. Stuart Meaker, by far the most impressive and quickest of England's seamers in practice, could be on the brink of a Test debut.
He could find less sympathetic places to make it. While Meaker, relatively short for a modern fast bowler, is not one to generate steepling bounce, he may enjoy the humidity and the sea fret that sometimes aids swing bowling at the ground. He may surprise a few with his pace and his skill, too.
"I am confident. The guys have done it in the past. A couple of guys have done it in subcontinental conditions, a couple haven't done it in subcontinental conditions but we know if we're going to win this game we're going to have to score runs."

It is an obvious point but true. If England's batsmen continue to struggle, technically or temperamentally, against spin, it will make no difference what bowling attack they field

Rs 35 cr for Kasab’s security: Why nothing for NSG, asks Kejriwal

New Delhi: A former NSG commando, who fought terrorists in the 26/11 attack and was invalidated from service after he became medically unfit, today claimed he has not got any financial benefits or pension.

Flanked by activist-politician Arvind Kejriwal and his associates, 34-year-old former NSG commando Surender Singh told a press conference that he has so far received just Rs. 4 lakh, including Rs. 2.5 lakh from the Government of India, as financial benefits.

However, the government rejected his claim with Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari saying that the commando has been paid Rs. 31 lakh in the form of ex-gratia payment by the Governments of India and Maharashtra.

17:00 Has Anna Hazare been sidelined? Interestingly, the Government's rejection first came on PIB's twitter handle even as the press conference was on.

Narrating his story, Mr Singh said he was severely injured in the operation to flush out terrorists from the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai and was invalidated from service in October, 2011.

He said he has not received "even a single paise" from the government since last year.

Mr Singh claimed that NSG commandos, who were injured in the 26/11 operation, received a "number of gifts in the form of cheques" but the force had not dispersed them to the people concerned.

"I saw a file in which the photocopy of a cheque of Rs. 2 lakh each from Rohan Motors Pvt Ltd and another firm were received in my name. I never got the money. Not just me but none of my colleagues got the money which came in their name.

I want to know who en-cashed them and where are they now?" he asked.

"When I asked officials what happened to the money, they said the Home Ministry decided that no gifts or donations will be received by the NSG. But they did not show me the records to prove that the money had been returned," Singh said.

He also demanded that an enquiry be launched into the matter and the government clarify what it did with the money gifted by several firms and individuals.

He also distributed copies of an RTI reply which said he received around Rs. 2.5 lakh as financial benefits from the Government of India.

Presenting an order from the Government which said Mr Singh was not eligible to get pension as he has put in only 14 years and three months of service as against the mandatory 15 years, Kejriwal claimed there are several clauses in the law under which a commando can be given concessions so that he gets his pension.

"Is this the way to treat our commandos who sacrifice their lives for the nation? Does he deserve just Rs. 4 lakh? The government should say what happened to the cheques that were gifted to the NSG," he said.

The Government was swift in rejecting the allegations when it took to twitter and said: "The government has given Nk (Naik) Surender Singh all his dues."

Press Information Bureau's twitter handle said: "(The government has) informed Singh on November 16 through telephone that war injury pension has been sanctioned and bankers were also informed."

"Surender Singh is getting war injury pension of Rs. 25,254 per month. Rs. 31 lakh retirement emoluments is paid to Surender Singh," it said.

Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the commandos were drawn from different forces. "I will inquire into it," he told reporters when asked about the allegations.

Mr Tewari said Surender Singh has been paid Rs. 31 lakh and that he also received Rs. 25,000 which is not in the form of a war injury pension.

"....if at all anything which needs to be done in order to preserve and protect the honour of those people who on daily basis risk their lives for the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country, this government will never be found wanting," Mr Tewari said.

However, Mr Singh rejected the claims and said he has not received any money from the government.
"You can check my bank account. I have not got any money
The government is lying," he said.
Mr Singh said he received roughly around Rs. 4 lakh as rewards from various sources, including Rs. 1 lakh each from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. "From that money, I spent over Rs. 1 lakh on medical expenses. I have a family to run," he said.
Later, Mr Kejriwal tweeted: "Govt shamelessly misleading the nation. 31 lakhs given to 11 injured, not to Surinder Singh.
Out of 31 lakhs, surinder got jst 2.5 lakh."

"Can govt prove that surinder getting Rs. 25 thousand per month? If it is not proved, who wud resign in govt for misleading nation?" he asked

"Govt says that surinder informed of pension on "phone" on 16 Nov. Interesting. Pensions informed on phone? Since when? No papers needed?" he asked.

Facebook post on bandh: 9 held for vandalizing clinic in Palghar

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra Police today arrested nine people from Palghar for vandalizing a clinic, after the niece of the clinic owner posted a comment on Facebook questioning the shutdown in the wake of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's death.

Two girls — Shaheen Dhada and Renu — were arrested over their post opposing the Mumbai shutdown but were granted bail after they furnished personal bonds, police said.

"So far, we have arrested nine persons in connection with ransacking the clinic of Abdul Dhada. We are looking for some more people," SP Thane rural Ravindra Sengaokar said.

Shaheen, who was arrested after she posted comments on the social networking site opposing the shutdown on Sunday when 86-year-old Thackeray was cremated, said police was polite to her and she had no complaints against any police personnel. "I have apologized for the post," she said, adding she had no comments to offer on whether she had done anything wrong.

She allegedly said that one should not observe bandh for Thackeray's funeral. "We should remember Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev," the post said.

Her friend Renu, who was arrested for 'liking' the post, felt that she was "wrongfully" arrested.

According to their advocate Sudhir Gupta, both were arrested under section 505(2)(statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) following a police complaint lodged by a local Sena leader.

Police sources said a FIR has been registered against more than 50 people including some Shiv Sainiks who have been named in the report following the attack.

Also, a probe has been ordered into whether the contents of the Facebook post constituted an offence and even if the offence was registered why were the arrests made, Maharashtra Police's IG (law and order) Deven Bharti said.

Abdul Dhada, whose clinic was ransacked, said, "For our security they have posted the police because what has gone wrong should not happen again...we don't have any complaint against anybody and treatment we received from the police station is absolutely fine".

TOI had reported in its edition dated November 19 that Shiv Sainiks, angered by Shaheen Dhada's post on a social networking site, vandalized a clinic in Palghar owned by her uncle.

On Sunday, Shaheen Dhada (21) posted a comment on her Facebook page questioning the shutdown (following Bal Thackeray's death). Local Shiv Sainiks in Palghar objected and asked her to apologize, which she allegedly refused to initially. Despite her later posting of an apology, a big mob of activists vandalized the Dhada orthopaedic hospital belonging to her uncle Dr Abdul Dhada and manhandled staff and patients. Under Sainiks' pressure, police detained Shaheen and her friend Rini Srinivasan (21, who had 'liked' Shaheen's comment on FB) late at night and arrested them on Monday morning for "hurting religious sentiments." The charge was later reduced and the two girls granted bail on surety of Rs 15,000 each.

Ind vs Eng: India crush England by 9 wickets on Day 5 in 1st Test

NEW DELHI: Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli chased down the required 77 runs in 15.3 overs as India completed a nine-wicket victory to take a 1-0 lead against England on the fifth day of the first Test at Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Scorecard
Pujara was adjudged the man of the match for scoring 247 runs in both the innings without getting dismissed.
Kevin Pietersen took a good catch at long-on to dismiss Virender Sehwag off Graeme Swann to deny India a ten-wicket victory.

Swann bowled a loopy off-spinner around off, Sehwag came down the track for a big shot over long on but failed to get the timing right. It balloons in the air and Pietersen took the catch over his head. The backward momentum pushed him towards the ropes but he did well to maintain the balance.

Sehwag and Pujara brought up the Indian fifty in the eighth over.
Earlier, Pragyan Ojha took four wickets as following on, England were bowled out for 406 runs in their second innings.
Lunch was taken at the end of England second innings.
India bounced back after a mediocre Day 4 evening session and picked up the remaining five wickets by conceding another 66 runs.

Ojha once again shone with the ball as he picked both the overnight batsmen in quick succession and finished with 9 wickets in the match, his best Test match figures.

Alastair Cook was the star with the bat for England but barring him and Matt Prior all England struggled.

England's innings ended when Zaheer came from round the wicket and served a fuller length delivery outside off, Tim Bresnan got forward and drove it firmly through the line, but he failed to keep it down and substitute fielder Ajinkya Rahane took a fine tumbling catch to his left in the covers.

R Ashwin finally got his first wicket when he clean bowled Graeme Swann.

Swann tried to reverse sweep but missed and was clean bowled by a full delivery.

England lost their eighth wicket when Umesh Yadav took a return catch to dismiss Stuart Broad.

Yadav darted in a length delivery, around middle and off, Broad attempted to turn it off his pads but it stopped a bit onto him and took the leading edge and Yadav completed a simple return catch.
Pragyan Ojha scalped Matt Prior and captain Alastair Cook in his alternate overs.
Ojha bowled at a flatter trajectory, shade short in length around off and turning in a bit, Cook came back and looked to punch it through the line, but failed to do so and the ball went on to disturb the timber.
Cook played remarkably well to score 176 runs with the help of 21 hits to the fence.
Ojha gave India the much-needed breakthrough when he dismissed Prior.
Ojha tossed the ball up around middle and off, it gripped the surface and stopped a bit onto Prior, who remained on the back foot and just pushed at it. It came off the toe end of the bat and Ojha took a simple return catch.
Prior hit 11 fours in his 91-run knock and added 157 runs with captain Alastair Cook for the sixth wicket.

The day's play started with Cook and Prior resuming England second innings, following on.
On Day 4, Cook and Prior's innings restored England's belief in their ability to handle India's spinners on turning tracks after the debacle in the first innings.

For a family that had been torn apart with two of its members training their guns on each other, the Chadhas and their well-wishers put up a calm and united front for several hours.
Close to a hundred of them waited patiently outside the AIIMS mortuary from 10 am on Sunday, waiting for the procedure to end, so that Gurdeep Singh Chadha alias Ponty and his younger brother Hardeep could be taken home one last time.

At 4.15 pm, very peacefully the two bodies were put on ambulances adorned with flowers and everybody left for the Chhattarpur farmhouse, the residence of the two brothers.

Two hours later, the entire entourage was back. But the calm had given way to anger.
Alighting from their cars at 6.30 pm at AIIMS, angry family members narrated stories of how the ambulances never reached the farmhouse. They were stopped metres away by policemen who said bullets were still lodged inside Ponty’s body.
Chadha’s son, angry at the to and fro, was heard speaking to policemen. “How have you let this happen? People have been waiting at the crematorium for hours because we were supposed to take the bodies there after Chhattarpur. And now you tell us that we have to come back here because the post-mortem examination is not complete? We will wait here for one hour, and then we will go to the crematorium,” he said.

India destroy England batting, need mere 77 to win 1st Test

India took control of the first cricket Test against England after packing them off for 406 in their second innings at lunch, which left the home team with a paltry victory target of 77 on the fifth and final day here today.

Pragyan Ojha dealt two severe blows on England in the space of only 12 balls, by breaking the stubborn sixth wicket stand between rival captain Alastair Cook and wicketkeeper Matt Prior, to provide the spark for India's renewed quest of winning the Test.

Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and Zaheer Khan polished off the tail in style to leave the hosts a small target to chase in the last two sessions and take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

Ojha finished with 4 for 120 after a fine morning spell of 2 for 18 in 11 overs, which included the wickets of Cook (176) and Prior (91).

England trailed India by 330 runs after making 191 in their first innings in reply to India's mammoth for 521 for 8 declared and then avoided the innings defeat yesterday by reaching 340 for five.

The visitors lost their last five wickets for the addition of 66 runs in 26.3 overs and the final wicket – that of Tim Bresnan - fell seven minutes before the scheduled lunch forcing an early break.

After being frustrated by Cook and Prior since the afternoon session yesterday, Ojha dismissed the two in superb fashion by deceiving both with his turn off the bowlers' rough to prise open the doors of victory for India before lunch.

Sunita Williams returns to Earth after 4 months in space

Record-setting Indian-American Sunita Williams along with two fellow astronauts safely returned to Earth today from the International Space Station, touching down on the steppes of central Kazakhstan, after spending four months in orbit.
It was a perfect landing for Williams and two astronauts, Flight Engineers Yuri Malenchenko and Aki Hoshide, as they touched down in the dark, chilly expanses of central Kazakhstan on board a Russian Soyuz capsule.
The three astronauts landed at 0726 IST in the town of Arkalyk.
Helicopters rushed with the search-and-recovery crew to assist them, as their capsule parachuted down some 35 kilometres from the planned touchdown site due to a procedural delay.

Another three astronauts remain on board the International Space Station (ISS) and will return next year.

Earlier, the trio bid farewell to their fellow astronauts at the ISS, Flight Engineers Kevin Ford, Evgeny Tarelkin and Oleg Novitskiy.

The trio undocked from the Rassvet module of the ISS yesterday.

The return of Williams, Hoshide and Malenchenko has wrapped up a 127-day space journey for them, since their launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on July 15, this year, including 125 days spent aboard the ISS.
Williams, 47, now has spent a total of 322 days in space during her two long-duration missions. She previously served aboard the ISS as an Expedition 14/15 flight engineer from December 9, 2006, to June 22, 2007.
Williams now also holds the record for spacewalking time for female astronauts.
Williams has a total of 50 hours and 40 minutes of spacewalking time over seven spacewalks, including the three she conducted during Expeditions 32 and 33.

Cisco Systems to buy Meraki for $1.2 billion

NEW YORK: Cisco Systems, the world's largest maker of computer networking gear, said it is buying Meraki for $1.2 billion to expand its ability to let customers compute in the cloud.

Cloud computing refers to the increasingly popular practice of storing software applications in remote data centres that are accessed over the Internet instead of installing programs on individual machines.
Meraki is based in San Francisco and also has offices in New York, London and Mexico. The privately held company was founded in 2006 by members of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science. Meraki technology offers customers Wi-Fi, switching, security and mobile device management centrally managed from the cloud.

Meraki will form Cisco's new Cloud Networking group, led by Meraki CEO Sanjit Biswas. The company said on its website it had originally planned to remain independent and go public, but joining Cisco will help it achieve its goal of hitting $1 billion in revenue a year.

Rob Soderbery, senior vice president, Cisco Enterprise Networking Group, said in a statement, "Meraki's solution was built from the ground up optimized for cloud, with tremendous scale, and is already in use by thousands of customers to manage hundreds of thousands of devices."
Cisco, based in San Jose, California, expects the acquisition to close in its second fiscal quarter ending in January. The $1.2 billion purchase price includes cash and retention-based incentives.
The purchase follows its $125 million purchase last week of Cloupia, which develops software that helps data center operators manage their resources.

Microsoft to drop Windows Live Messenger, switch to Skype

New York: Microsoft is dropping its instant-messaging program and forcing most users to switch to Skype. Maintaining Windows Live Messenger made less sense after Microsoft Corp. bought Skype for $8.5 billion last year.
A new version of Skype released a few weeks ago allows users to sign in with a Microsoft account. By merging the two services, people won't have to maintain two separate contact lists.
Microsoft says much has changed in how people communicate. There's more use of text messaging and social networking. Microsoft says that Messenger users who switch to Skype will get benefits such as the ability to call landline and mobile phones and better support on mobile devices

Except for mainland China, Messenger will be discontinued worldwide after the first quarter of 2013.

Tata Motors profit up 10% on JLR

Ratan Tata-led Tata Motors Ltd net profit fell short of expectations as rising marketing costs hurt its margins and slowing economic growth curbed demand for its commercial vehicles.

India's largest car maker by revenue said net profit rose to 20.75 billion rupees ($381 million) in July-September from 18.77 billion rupees a year ago, while revenue increased 20 percent to 434.03 billion rupees on rising demand at its key Jaguar Land Rover subsidiary.
Analysts expected profit of 24.41 billion rupees on revenue of 441.91 billion rupees, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
The operating margin for its India business fell to 5.9 percent for the quarter down from 7.2 percent in the year ago period. Tata Motors' Chief Financial Officer C. Ramakrishnan said that the company expected to improve its India profit margins, as it continues to focus on cutting operational costs, but the demand outlook was clouded by the slowing economic growth.
We continue to see sluggish economic activity, he said. We continue to see demand pressure in the market.
Tata Motors, which depends on JLR for 90 percent of the group's profit, said the iconic British brand's operating margin stood at 14.8 percent in July-September, down from 14.9 percent a year earlier.
Revenue at the luxury British brand rose 12.8 percent to 3.29 billion pounds in the period, less than the 34.4 percent gain seen in the previous quarter. Tata has grown dependent on JLR, which it bought for $2.3 billion in 2008, as domestic sales of its own models struggle.

Dhoni launches ‘Mahi’ racing team

After joining the Supersport FIM World Championship (600 cc) mid-way through the 2012 season as MSD R-N Racing Team, the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-team is now targeting a title finish in the upcoming season with new name and team.

Rechristened as Mahi Racing Team India, the team added extra ammunition to its artillery by signing three-time world champion Kenan Sofouglu and fourth-placed Fabien Foret while existing riders Dan Linfoot and Florian Marino being retained for the next season.

“We plan to open a riding school in India. We have taken a small step and in course of time I want to see an Indian driver on our bikes,” said Dhoni at the launch event here.

“Earlier in India, bikes were used for commuting only but in last ten years the engine capacity of bikes in the market have risen from 100cc to 220-250cc, so there is demand for speedy bikes. I was fascinated by the sport and it feels great to be associated with it. But in addition to speed we will also stress on safe driving and following the traffic rules,” he added.

The team created history by pulling off a podium finish after just five rounds last season. Sofouglu is expected to boost the team’s performance as the Turkish rider is the championship’s all-time leading race winner having won 17 races.

Racing for Kawasaki in 2012, he claimed his third championship after the Portugese Grand Prix. He previously won the championship for Ten Kate Honda in 2007 and 2010. He also raced in the world superbike championship for Ten Kate in 2008 but with limited success.

Frenchman Foret is a 2002 world champion and had 24 podium finishes including eleven wins by the end of 2008 season.

At a glittering launch event in Mumbai, the new look team, along with their superbikes, was unveiled by Dhoni. In the new season, Mahi Racing will also become the factory team of Kawasaki. During the winter season the riders will be testing the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R. The team will make their India debut at the Buddh International circuit next year.

Again Obama Wins ...............

Well  As  All know for winning one have 270 seats ......
President Obama elected again  as All projects he will be re-elected and he promised his thrilled supporters "that for the United States of America the best is yet to come."

Obama appeared before thousands of cheering Democrats to the beat of Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" after securing a strong electoral lead, although he just eked out victories in key states.
He congratulated his opponent Mitt Romney and said, "In the weeks ahead I am looking forward to sitting down with Gov. Romney to discuss how we can move this country forward."
In a victory speech studded with the soaring rhetoric that first drew voters to him in 2008, Obama reminded the electorate what was still on his agenda -- immigration reform, climate change and job creation.
"Tonight, you voted for action not politics as usual." he told supporters in Chicago. "You elected us to focus on your job, not ours."

Obama told Romney supporters that "I have listened to you… you have made me a better president."
He added, "I return to the White House more determined, more inspired than ever."
The election is a validation, if not an overwhelming mandate, in support of the president's policies of the last four years, which included a major overhaul of the healthcare system and a drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Obama built a coalition of young people, minorities, and college educated women and won by turning out supporters with a carefully calibrated ground operation to get out the vote in crucial states like Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin.

He thanked those who voted "whether you voted for very first time, or waited in line for a very long time -- by the way we have to fix that," he joked.

He thanked Vice President Joe Biden, whom he called "America's best happy warrior" and first lady Michele Obama.

"Sasha and Malia," he said addressing his two daughters. "You're growing up to be two strong, smart, beautiful young women…I'm so proud of you. But I will say for now, one dog is probably enough," he said riffing on his promise of a puppy four years ago.
Prior to the president's speech, Mitt Romney conceded gracefully in Boston.
"I so wish that I had been able to fufill your hopes....but the nation chose another leader," Romney told heart broken supporters at his Boston headquarters.
"I pray the president will be successful in guiding our nation," Romney said before running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and their families joined Romney on the podium.
Obama's lease on the White House was renewed with a crucial victory in Ohio.
Celebrations erupted in Obama's home town of Chicago, in New York's Time Square and outside the White House, while Romney's Boston headquarters went mournfully quiet.
"We're all in this together. That's how we campaigned, and that's who we are. Thank you," Obama tweeted even before formally announcing his victory.
Nevertheless, it was a squeaker. In Florida and Virginia, states that were key to both candidates, Obama and Romney were separated by a single percentage point. Ohio also was close, with the candidates also separated by a point late into the vote count. And the popular vote was nearly split evenly down the middle nationally.
With counting still going on and before Florida had been called, Obama led with a significant electoral lead, 303 votes 203.
After a campaign for the White House and both houses of Congress that cost more than $6 billion, the make up of all three branches remains very much the same as it was before the election. Obama remains in the White House, Democrats retain control of the Senate and Republicans continue to control the House.
